How to Work on a Pottery Wheel

The mechanism of making pottery on a wheel is simple. The wheel with the clay placed on it rotates, and the potter shapes the piece with their hands, forming it from the soft, plastic mass. However, success depends on practice, the ability to feel the material, and control of your movements.

The process consists of several stages:

  • Kneading the clay with your hands to make it soft and workable.

  • Placing the lump of clay in the center of the wheel and carefully centering it.

  • Using your fingers to form an opening in the middle of the clay.

  • Pulling the walls upward to create the desired height.

  • Shaping the piece into the form you want.

  • Smoothing the rim and the entire surface.

  • Decorating the piece if desired.

  • Cutting the finished form off the wheel.

  • Letting it dry partially and then firing it in a kiln.

  • Glazing (optional) and firing it again.

Your first attempt may not turn out perfectly if you try working on the pottery wheel without an experienced instructor. The good news is that clay is forgiving: you can reuse the same piece of clay and go through the whole process again and again until you create exactly what you had in mind.
